Prasuti tantra deals with pregnancy, labour and puerperium and Streeroga deals with management of diseases manifesting specially in women. The program offers theoretical and practical knowledge in Gynecology and Obstetrics, management of antenatal and postnatal care, common gynecological problems and menopausal syndrome to utilize the techniques of female health care and to achieve a healthy baby.

M.S. Shalya Tantra is a 3 year postgraduate Ayurvedic medical course, mainly focus on areas like Wound Management, Fracture Healing, Ano-Rectal Diseases, and Urinary Disorders. Students are taught of ancient surgical procedures which explains in clinical, treatises, and surgical applications of various treatment modalities, treatment of chronic diseases, practical training with blood-letting through leeches, successful treatment for piles and fistula, and surgical procedures on patients.

This study deals with the surgical techniques, diagnosis of the surgical disorders, and surgical emergency management also demonstrates and explains surgical procedures and its knowledge that was performed and used before. In this course, student’s aims to include evaluating and discovering drug compounds, studying dosage requirements, identifying possible interactions with other medicines and discovering the possible side effects of the medicines.

MD (Ay) Rasashastra & Bhaishajyakalpana []

M.D in Rasa Shastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana is a 3 year postgraduate program, the program basically focuses on the science of combining various metals and other substances with herbs to alleviate disorders from the diseased and help people to stay healthy and vibrant. Rasa-Shastra is a specialized branch of Ayurveda, which is designed to deal with the preparation of mineral and inorganic-based drugs in order to treat various diseases. It is the study of combination of certain minerals and metals including mercury with herbs and their properties, and therapeutic uses. During the course, students learn about the useful properties of metals, like copper, mercury, gold, silver, and such which when combined with different herbs, help in eliminating disorders like eye diseases, increasing fat metabolism, jaundice, hepatitis, etc. and keep a person healthy. Rasa Shastra is faster than other ayurvedic branches.

MD in Rasa Shastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana Ayurvedic pharmacy course that mainly deals with herbal formulations. Subject includes details of design and development of formulations, standardization, quality control, pharmacy practice, forensic pharmacy etc giving ample opportunity to prepare the scholar suitable for Ayurvedic and herbal pharma industry, R & D centres and academics.

MD in Kayachikitsa is a 3 year postgraduate clinical course, imparts training in the division of General Medicine in Ayurveda. As a medical discipline, Kayachikitsa forms the basis of all other branches of Ayurvedic treatment, and hence lays the foundation for advanced skills in Ayurveda. The program has been designed to equip the scholar with skills in designing a treatment protocol comprising a range of internal and external medications and specialized therapies according to the nature of the disease and the patient.

M.D. in Rachana Sharira is a 3 year postgraduate ayuvedic course that deals with the structure of a human body, its applied aspects. Dissection of human body forms a basis for this. Marma or vital points of human body is an important aspect dealt here. It finds its parallel in modern discipline of human anatomy. Sharira Rachana not only deals with structural study but also deals with how a better one can reproduce. The course teaches constitution of body according to the panchabhuta system, embryological and genetic considerations, anthropometry, various body tissues, organs and vital points as described in ayurveda.

Students are able to describe the details of fertilization; sex determination and differentiation; organogenesis and the human body in terms of dosha, dhatu & mala and apply these concepts in clinical diagnosis and practice. The human body is made up of two parts - Manas Sharir and Sthula Sharir. These two are site of diseases, so it is very essential to know about human body itself. Knowledge of human body is the very first step in the world of medical science.

It’s the science of herbal plants. It can be correlated with the discipline of Pharmacology in modern medicine. The word 'Dravya" means 'drug'. The word 'Guna' means 'properties', therefore, the term 'Dravyaguna ' means the science that deals with the study of the properties of drugs.

Students are trained with the details of drug identification, pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, evaluation of pharmacological activities, in depth details of Ayurvedic treatises on medicinal plants. Scholar will be efficient and suitable to work in herbal industry, medicinal plant research, academics etc.

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery [BAMS]

Bachelor of Ayurvedic medicine and surgery (BAMS) is a 5.5 years graduate degree that studies the integrated system of modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda.  BAMS course covers an exhaustive investigation of current life structures, physiology, social and preventive pharmaceuticals, toxicology, herbal science, ENT, standards of surgery, and alike to coach students with the normal methods in modern science. The course includes the study and application of natural herbs and its medicine within the field of health science. Ayurveda is one among the oldest systems of drugs and traces its roots to Vedic times. The study supports the curative properties of herbs and its medicines known for the natural elements that they contain.

Considered as an alternate method of treatment, the Ayurveda medicine system not only cures and prevents an ailment but also reduces the frequency with which diseases enter a person's body. It utilises the self-healing system of the body. Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is the responsible body for admission to Ayurveda education at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and for practice Ayurvedic medicine in India.

Ph.D (Ay) Rasashastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana is a 3 year ayurveda doctoral course. Rasashastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana (Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacy) is Non - Clinical course. Keeping with tradition, the course prepares students to an Ayurvedic physician who is capable of formulating and preparing medicines according to the specific needs of a patient. The program provides training in medicinal chemistry and preparation of highly potent medicines from minerals and metals. The course also deals with the principles and practice of Ayurvedic Pharmacy with its varied pharmaceutical methods and dosage forms.

About College

In an effort to materialize the dream of imparting quality professional education to the masses in a small town of Moodbidri, Alva’s Education Foundation under the leadership and guidance of visionary Dr. M. Mohan Alva, established Alva’s Ayurveda Medical College in the year 1996. The institution is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health sciences, Karnataka, Bangalore and approved by Central Council of Indian Medicine, New Delhi. This 18 years journey is a saga in providing the need of standard medical education in Indian system of Medicine attracting the students from different parts of India and abroad. Initially the strength of students was 60, which in successive years increased and today every year 100 students take admission to a 4 ½ years bachelor medicine and surgery (B.A.M.S) course.

After serving the society through under graduate education for 10 years, this institution achieved another mile stone by the commencement of post graduate course in 2 disciplines namely Dravyaguna Vijnana and Shalya Tantra from the year 2006.  In the subsequent years Post graduate course in further four specialities namely Panchakarma, Kaumarabhritya, Ayurveda Sidddhanta and Shareera Rachana were added. In the year 2010-11, 5 more specialties were added namely Kayachikitsa, Rasashastra, Bhaishajya Kalpana, Agada Tantra and Prasooti Tantra and Stree Roga. Last year (2015-16), we have started P.G courses in 5 new subjects viz. Shalakya Tantra, Manasa Roga, Roga Nidana evam Vikruti Vijnana, Swasthavritta and Kriya Shareera. The institution has also commenced Ph.D Programme in the subject of Dravya Guna in the year 2014.
