Bachelor of Physiotherapy is an undergraduate Academic Course in a Medical Science Field known as Physiotherapy. Physiotherapy uses physical agents like exercise, massage and other modalities for providing treatment to those patients whose movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, disease or environmental factors. The duration of BPT is 4½ years including internship of 6 months. Physical Therapy Programs provide core skills like manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the application of electro physical modalities, to the prospective students. There are various Physical Therapy Colleges which offer Physiotherapy Courses. Physical Therapy Degree Course is especially meant for those who have compassion for the sick or injured. Physiotherapy is very challenging and demanding as one may need to work for long hours and have tremendous patience as some patients may not respond to immediate treatment. Apart from rigorous education, one needs to have lots of physical stamina because of the nature of the work. An individual seeking a physical therapy career should have excellent interpersonal skills to get the best from his patients.
Master of Physiotherapy is a Post Graduate Academic Degree awarded for a course or program in the field of Physical Therapy, more popularly known as Physiotherapy. It is also known as MPT or M.P.T. which is an abbreviated form of the Master of Physiotherapy degree. Some Institutes also abbreviate it as 'M.P.Th' which also stands for Master of Physiotherapy. The duration of M.P.T. is 2 years. Physical Therapy programs provide practical learning experience which enable knowledge gain, skill and the required behaviour expected from an expert Physiotherapist. The course curriculum is based on case studies and clinical practice so as to encourage students in critical thinking.
In view of the changing Health Care services worldwide and a wider acknowledgement about the importance of Physical Rehabilitation of the disabled, Physiotherapy gained importance in last 50 years in Western countries. The ripple set waves in India as well. Vokkaligara Sangha felt the need to train our people in this area to complete their mission of giving total Health care to the needy and poor.
The Sangha sought permission from Government of Karnataka and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences to start Bachelor’s Degree programme in Physical Therapy, in the year 1997. Both statutory bodies permitted to start the course with an intake of 25 students to be trained in the Department of Physiotherapy of the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (accorded sanction). Today the Department has grown up in facility and faculty. Gained an independent identity, with the name, “Kempegowda Institute of Physiotherapy”, named after the ruler ‘Sri Kempegowda’, the founder of Bangalore City. The institution has annual intake of 60 students in BPT and 20 intake of MPT.
