B.Sc. Biotechnology is a 3 year undergraduate Biotechnology course. Biotechnology is a field of applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and other fields requiring by-products.
M.Sc. Medical Biotechnology is a 2 year postgraduate Biotechnology course. Medical Biotechnology covers the molecular biology, fermentation and engineering processes involved in producing current and new therapeutic agents, and the ways in which biotechnology developments are commercialized.
M.Sc. Bioinformatics is a 2 year post graduate Bioinformatics course. Bioinformatics is the application of statistics and computer science to the field of molecular biology. The program provides competence in computational biology/bioinformatics by providing training in the areas of molecular biology, information technology, statistics and bioinformatics. The program provides hands on expertise in the essential multi-disciplinary fields of genomics, proteomics, protein engineering, metabolic pathway engineering, Pharmacogenomics, discovery of new drugs and vaccines, molecular diagnostic kits, Agro-biotechnology that comprise the core of Bioinformatics.
M.Sc. Molecular Biology and Human Genetics is a 2 year postgraduate Genetics course. In molecular biology, reverse transcriptase is commonly used in research to apply the polymerase chain reaction technique to RNA in a technique called reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). And in human genetics genes are the primary units of inheritance in all organisms. A gene is a unit of heredity and corresponds to a region of DNA that influences the form or function of an organism in specific ways.
M.Sc. by Research in Life Science is a 2 year postgraduate Environmental course. Life science comprises the fields of science that involve the scientific study of living organisms, like plants, animals, and human beings. As far this Masters’ degree is concerned there is a common curriculum for semesters I, II and III, whereas in semester IV, the students will be given the option of specializing in one area from different areas of Life Sciences that would be on offer at that time.
M.Sc. Systems Biology is a 2 year course. Systems biology has significantly contributed to successful research developments in human health and environmental sustainability. The ability to design predictive, multi scale computational models enables scientists and physicians to discover new biomarkers for diseases, stratify patients based on unique genetic profiles and target drugs and other treatments. Systems biology has the potential for entirely new kinds of exploration and drives constant innovation in biotechnology and computational biology.
M.Sc Genome Engineering is a 2 year postgraduate Genetics Engineering course. Genome engineering means the direct human manipulation of an organism's genome using modern DNA technology. It involves the introduction of foreign DNA or synthetic genes into the organism of interest. The introduction of new DNA does not require the use of classical genetic methods; however traditional breeding methods are typically used for the propagation of recombine organisms.
PG Diploma in Cellular & Molecular Diagnostics is a 1 year course. Cell and molecular diagnostics (CMD) have become an essential part of investigations required in providing optimal care and has become an important tool for the health care providers for better treatment. CMD gives insights into the pathogenesis and prognosis of various diseases.
B.Sc. Food Science and Nutrition is a 3 year undergraduate Food Technology program. Food & Nutrition concerns with the field of Science and in this course main emphasis is given on food, nutrition, diet and their production, management, preservation, etc. The course focuses on the interface between Human Nutrition and Food Science as well as an integration of the two disciplines. It is designed to meet the increasing demand for nutrition scientists who in addition have a thorough knowledge of Food Science and Technology with respect to food processing, preservation, storage, quality assurance, and nutritional implication.
B.Sc. Forensic Sciences is a 3 year undergraduate course which deals with the most scientific ways in which various kinds of crimes or activities can be proved. Forensic Science is essentially a crime and laboratory-based profession. But the expertise of a forensic professional is also used in civil cases for issues like proving the validity of a signature on a will, to a claim of the products liability, to find out whether an industry is complying with environmental rules or not. Forensic Science is broadly grouped into three Types: Medical, laboratory and field science.
The School of Life Sciences (SOLS) at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal established in 2002, gained an independent identity in 2006 and is one of the top biotechnological institutes of the country.
SOLS is identified as TIFAC-CORE (Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council - Centers of Relevance & Excellence) under vision 2020 of the Govt. of India in the area of Pharmacogenomics. It actively promotes advanced research in India and abroad, supported by Govt. of India agencies such as DBT (in Translational Medicine), ICMR, DST, BRNS and number of other industry partners.
