Bachelor of Ayurvedic medicine and surgery (BAMS) is a 5.5 years graduate degree that study the integrated system of modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda. BAMS course covers an exhaustive investigation of current life structures, physiology, social and preventive pharmaceuticals, toxicology, herbal science, ENT, standards of surgery, and alike to coach students with the normal methods in modern science. The course includes the study and application of natural herbs and its medicine within the field of health science. Ayurveda is one among the oldest systems of drugs and traces its roots to Vedic times. The study support the curative properties of herbs and its medicines known for the natural elements that they contain.

Considered as an alternate method of treatment, the Ayurveda medicine system not only cures and prevents an ailment but also reduces the frequency with which diseases enter a person's body. It utilises the self-healing system of the body. Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is the responsible body for admission to Ayurveda education at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and for practice Ayurvedic medicine in India.

The Nangelil Ayurveda Medical College under the aegis of Nangelil charitable trust (Reg.No.SR/P/3-2001) in 2002 was a milestone in the growth of Nangelil group of institutions.Considering the facilities,Govt of Kerala had accorded sanction and approval to start the Ayurveda college, vide GOMS No 225/H&FWD dated 28.08.2002, and permission was also granted to conduct Para-medical courses here. This college is a self financing institution started with the aim to impart authentic wisdom of Ayurveda and conducts Ayurveda Acharya (BAMS) 5½ years course envisaged and approved by the CCIM vide letter FNo. 4-10/2002/Ay (1) dated 22.07.12 of CCIM New Delhi. The College is fully under the governance of the board of directors of the trust and Dr K A Bhaskaran, the renowned physician is the president of the trust.

The College was affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University for degree course from the academic year 2001-2002 and later in 2010 got affiliated to the Kerala University for Health Sciences. Admission to degree course till the Academic year 2009-10 was under M.G University. The first batch under KUHS was admitted in the academic year 2010-2011.

Admission procedures are strictly as per the guidelines of the Govt of Kerala stipulated time to time. Currently the admission capacity is 60 per year out of which 100% will be through NEET entrance examinations conducted Prof. Dr.A.G. Prasannakumari. MD (Ay), the principal is an experienced academician, researcher, clinician and administrator retired from Government Ayurveda College.
