B.A.M.S. or Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery is an undergraduate Ayurvedic course which is awarded after successful completion of a five and a half years program or course that covers the study of the integrated system of modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda. The full 5½ years duration of the degree includes one year of internship also. The degree course covers the study of modern anatomy, physiology, principles of medicine, social and preventive medicine, pharmacology, toxicology, forensic medicine, botany, ENT, principles of surgery, etc. along with ayurvedic topics. Ayurvedacharya recognition is given to the recipient of a Bachelor’s Degree of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (B.A.M.S) and the degree holders can use the title Vaidyar before their name (abbreviated as Vr).
Rasashastra is a branch of Pharmacy that deals with the study of chemical substances that are used as medicines in ayurveda & their detoxification & processing etc; whereas Bhaishajya Kalpana is a pharmaceutical department that deals with medicinal preparation.
MD in Kayachikitsa is a clinical course. The course imparts training in the division of General Medicine in Ayurveda. As a medical discipline, Kayachikitsa forms the basis of all other branches of Ayurvedic treatment, and hence lays the foundation for advanced skills in Ayurveda.
M.D in Ayurveda- Panchakarma is a full-time 2 year Post-graduate Program in Ayurveda specialized in Panchakarma. The eligibility of the course is clearing the B.A.M.S degree with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks and above.
M.S. Shalya Tantra is a full-time 3 year postgraduate Medical course. Eligibility to which is bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery degree from a recognized university with 60% of marks
The M. S. in Prasuti Tantra & Streeroga provides training in Ayurvedic Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatrics. Prasuti tantra deals with pregnancy, labour and puerperium and Streeroga deals with management of diseases manifesting specially in women. The program offers theoretical and practical knowledge in Gynecology and Obstetrics, management of antenatal and postnatal care, common gynecological problems and menopausal syndrome to utilize the techniques of female health care and to achieve a healthy baby.
Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, 69th Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham established a deemed to-be University u/s 3 of UGC Act 1956 in the year 1993 at Kanchipuram called “Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya”. Obviously the name of his illustrious Guru, the great Maha Swamigal has been thus immortalized. The said Mahavidyalaya was accorded the status of Deemed University and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India. he University started Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Ayurveda College and Hospital (SJSACH), as its unit, in the year 1995 and started the Professional Course of 5½ years B.A.M.S. degree (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery). The Central Council of Indian Medicine, New Delhi, the Govt. Authority for Ayurvedic education throughout India has recognized the institution and accorded approval for the college. Since then the college and hospital are growing with remarkable progress in infrastructure facilities and quality of education besides ideal health-care management.
